“Alone Tonight” by James Cole Burnett
For James Cole Burnett’s “Alone Tonight,” I handled directing, cinematography, and editing, creating a performance-driven music video that explores isolation, ego, and the tension of a relationship unfolding in someone's absence. Filmed at Music Box Studio in Idyllwild, California, the concept centers around an artist alone in a recording studio, filming himself as he performs, seemingly caught up in his own world.
Throughout the video, a slowly moving gimbal camera takes on the perspective of an unseen second character, almost like a significant other observing or confronting him. At moments, Burnett breaks the fourth wall, looking directly into the moving camera as though responding to someone in the middle of an argument. The contrast between the static, self-recorded performance and the constantly shifting perspective creates a subtle tension, blurring the line between solitude and confrontation.
Rather than relying on a traditional narrative, the video uses camera movement, perspective, and performance to tell the story, allowing the studio itself to become part of the emotional atmosphere.
